We share quality, diverse programmes with those unable to attend regular public concerts. Our audiences, whether patients at the Renal Christmas Party at Sunnybrook Hospital, children at Sick Kids’ Hospital, early Alzheimer residents in special facilities, seniors in long-term care residences, or mental health clients at Etobicoke General Hospital respond to music with joy and laughter. It is a privilege to listen to the reminiscences of veterans at Sunnybrook Hospital, to experience the joy of audience members dancing as we sing at Castleview-Wychwood Towers, to have our audience members at the Westbury Chronic Care Facility singing along with us. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e4d38dbc9bc9175db4e2906/1582232416180-V29A09A189KI89FE3O0M/african-drums.jpg Outreach - Sometimes our audiences surprise us When we performed Soundscapes of Toronto in the community, some choristers were concerned that the African singing and drumming would not engage audience members living in seniors’ residences. Instead, our performances solicited comments like: “I haven’t heard music like that since I lived in Ghana. It brings it all back like it was yesterday….” One gentleman at St. Anne’s Seniors’ Residence told us of his memory of singing, “In the bleak midwinter” as a soloist back in Britain. He told us he would give anything to hear it again, and tears came to his eyes as we sang the same arrangement he had sung in his youth. More than once, an otherwise non-verbal patient has sung along with us, remembering all the verses of a complex song. UCC upholds this ongoing commitment to mentor young singers by participating in school music workshops and by regularly inviting a children’s choir to perform at concerts in both official languages. Ms. Fraser then became a faculty member of the Royal Conservatory, teaching piano and theory. She has performed as a collaborative and solo pianist, chamber musician, vocal soloist and conductor. Her choral work has included several church positions: Soprano Soloist and Section Lead at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and Forest Hill United Church; Organist and Choir Director at Davenport-Perth United Church; Music and Choir Director at First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto where she also chaired a continent-wide conference of choral directors and other church musicians. Ms. Fraser has a long history of collaboration with other choirs, spearheading choir exchanges including the sponsorship of the Canadian tour of Coro Anthem, an award-winning Italian choir. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. She played piano with the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra at the Washio Music School’s 20th anniversary concert. During high school, she joined a choir that she also conducted for one year. During medical school at the Kansai Medical University in Osaka, she played keyboard in a jazz-fusion group. After Ms. Ochi became a pediatrician, she continued with her musical activities outside work. She studied jazz piano with Atsuko Hashimoto and played keyboard for an amateur rock band, Brain Masters, and piano for a pop music ensemble, Seasonal Workers. In 1997, Ms. Ochi came to Toronto as a research fellow and in 2001 became a staff Neurophysiologist at The Hospital for Sick Children in the Division of Neurology. She joined the Upper Canada Choristers in 1998 and has been studying piano and music theory with Ms. Laurie Evan Fraser. Salcedo has a degree in Graphic Design from the ProDiseño School of Visual Arts in Caracas, Venezuela and also studied music theory and Solfège at the Juan José Landaeta Conservatory in Caracas. His music studies led to playing the cuatro and percussion, and he has sung in the choir of the Municipal Orchestra in Caracas. Jacinto currently sings in the Tenor section of UCC as well as Cantemos. Jacinto has been instrumental in producing two CD recordings by Cantemos, redesigning and maintaining the UCC website and producing videos and concert streaming since 2020. Otto joined Upper Canada Choristers in 2001, and currently sings in the Bass section of UCC as well as Cantemos. Otto has been the graphic designer for UCC’s concert programs and posters since 2002. Born in England, Jennifer lived in Guiana, South America and moved to Canada in 1967 after a visit to Expo '67. Upon attending a UCC concert featuring show music she was sure she could handle the challenge of singing based on her five years performing in school choirs – of course, the next season featured a major classical work. Jean has been a member since 2015 and currently sings in the Bass section.
